“Ezra was diagnosed with SCID - severe combined immune deficiency during his newborn screening with the only cure being a bone marrow/stem cell transplant. Life expectancy untreated and undiagnosed is less than 2 years.

At 3 months of age and after 3 months in isolation, he went through his pre transplant conditioning and a combination of chemotherapy treatments. He received 50% match donor cells from mum. 15 days post transplant, Ezra suffered a pulmonary hemorrhage and a cardiac arrest after being revived and moved to the PICU he was intubated and in a medically induced coma; they did not think he would survive the night but this little warrior fought through the odds with everyone’s prayers and love made through the night and got better.

After two excruciating months in the hospital, they were discharged only to come back in three weeks because of a fever and line infection. This then caused a series of life threatening issues that prolonged their stay for 2.5 months more.

After being discharged the second time, Ezra contracted Covid which meant hospitalization for a few more days.

The family is now finally back home for the third time and hoping it stays that way. His cells have finally started to come in and he’s finally starting to stabilize even with slight GVHD. Ezra continues to fight the odds with a smile.

SCID affects 1 in 70,000 babies and luckily we were able to catch it early. It’s a Rare Disease with little awareness and we believe more countries need to add this to their newborn screening."
